GOP launches first attacks on Symington
By Zach SilberWith her candidacy just hours old, Vermont Republicans have already begun attacks on Democratic gubernatorial candidate and former House Speaker Gaye Symington.
Officially entering the gubernatorial race this morning, Symington touted "twelve years of a legislative record of which I am proud." By this afternoon, Vermont Republicans had released a statement labeling Symington's record of supporting higher taxes as "way outside the mainstream."
Defending three-term Republican Gov. Jim Douglas, state GOP Chairman Rob Roper said that his party "is proud of the Governor's record, and hopes that voters do pay attention to it."
"Speaker Symington looks like she will spend the next six months running away from her record," Roper said in a statement, "Obviously, it's impossible to lead others when you're running away from yourself."

I hold very strong
I hold very strong reservations about the leadership capabilities of Gaye Symmington to effectively govern the state. I similarly hold animosities towards her position and inaction to help lower the tax burden on hard working Vermonters. I do not believe the speaker has shown Vermonters she can lead us in these trying times. During this period of economic strife I find it especially important to back Governor Jim Douglas. I am pleased with the economic stimulus package the governor brought to the table, and as a former state treasurer I have faith in his abilities to lead the state into economic prosperity.
Gaye Symington shall be one
Gaye Symington shall be one of Vermont's greatest governors--even reasonable Republicans (a minority in The Chimp's party) are bored and frustrated with the bland buffoonery of "Jim = McJobs" Douglas.
Maybe Jeffords was the last honest VT GOPper...
