As U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy's stock rises, state Republican Party chief Rob Roper is facing an ugly fall. Here are Vermont's Winners & Losers for May 23, 2008

Winners

Losers

Patrick Leahy

He is positioned to potentially become chairman of the Appropriations Committee. His candidate Barack Obama this week basically claimed victory and is headed for the general election. And with Ted Kennedy’s new health problems, Leahy’s stature grows even further. He will likely move up to the top of everyone’s D.C. power list.

Peter Galbraith

It ends almost as quietly as it begun. This week Peter Galbraith’s candidacy for the Vermont Governorship ended. He is endorsing Gaye Symington. As a career diplomat, the governorship was never going to be a great fit for his resume. And with the existence of Pollina creating a three-way race the odds were long. Then Symington got in and that was it.

Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie

With health care advocate Deb Richter not running as the Democratic nominee this fall, Dubie scores a big win.

Rob Roper

The chairman of the Republican Party failed to get candidates for a majority of the statewide races; not fielding any candidates for U.S. House, state treasurer, secretary of state or auditor. This is a very poor showing. This is the chairman’s responsibility and it definitely makes him a loser for the week, but it also sets him up for a very rough fall.
