Losers

Tom Tremblay

Becoming Vermont’s next Commissioner of Safety replacing Kerry Sleeper, the 30 year veteran. Tremblay, the well regarded Burlington police chief, will assume responsibilities over all real-life “Super Troopers”.

Deb Markowitz

Markowitz joined the Indiana Democratic Party and four other States in a challenge to restrictions on Voter ID laws that require voters to show a form of identification. The argument is that Voter ID laws hurt turn out in poor and minority areas. But Markowitz, should have watch across the lake to Albany, where Governor Spitzer had to pull back from providing drivers licenses to illegal aliens. Voter ID laws just ensure we have US Citizens and State Residence Voting. Yes it will hurt the voting percentages of out-of-state UVM students and non-US Citizens but that is the goal. The polling shows that the illegal immigration issue can be a fire storm. And this week Markowitz started to play with fire. Follow Democrats may be running for the exits soon.

Rob Roper

Put together what we hear was a strong evening for the Republican Party on Thursday. With four hundred of the top grassroots activists and donors came together for the annual fall dinner. Tom Ridge, the former Homeland Secretary and Pennsylvania Governor, spoke and was a nice draw. The ability for Roper to continue to keep the faithful engaged and energized makes Roper one of the winners of the week.

Steve Adams

The minority leader led a closed door policy planning session last week and it looked like they came out more shell shocked than when they went in. Adams, the plain spoken but quiet leader, will struggle to keep the wayward flock in-line. House Republicans have no way to control the legislative outcome in Montpelier, so they are going to have to rely on getting their message out to voters. The interviews following the closed door session don’t give confidence to many insiders that the House Republicans realize the need for a clearer message taken straight to the voters in their districts. Fighting their battles in Montpelier will be a losing battle. We can all count.

Symington Economic Plan

Symington is a winner this week, more for her plan’s strategic strength rather than its content. “Why Vermont Works” is a Clintonian-style move that will help Symington and House Democrats counter the Governor’s accountability agenda. Symington wants a quality of life debate and not a tax debate. Her plan will help the House Democrats counter the Governor’s message. This is a political move that deserves notice and credit.
