For Pollina, persistence could pay

He may not have pulled it off tonight, but don't count Anthony Pollina out just yet.

Consider Bernie Sanders, who between 1972 and 1976, made four unsuccessful runs -- two Senate and two gubernatorial -- before being elected mayor of Burlington. All four campaigns resulted in single-digit losses. Sanders made a third failed run for governor in 1986 followed by a failed bid for an open House seat in 1988 before finally winning the House seat in 1990.
