Shumlin hits Douglas on public safety

Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin is taking aim at Republican Governor Jim Douglas. The topic: public safety.

“Jim Douglas’ budget this year is most notable for its many gambles and failure to live up to the governor’s own promises,” said a release from the state democratic party.

On Thursday officials from the Vermont Troopers Foundation, and the Vermont League of Cities joined Shumlin and Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Sears at a statehouse news conference highlighting public safety shortfalls in the budget.

"Public safety is one of our top concerns," said Shumlin. "We cannot balance this budget on the backs of state troopers who are trying to protect Vermonters at a time where we are facing challenges that are more frightening than we faced in the past."
