Chen plans to bow out of politics; Smith to take his place

State Rep. Harry Chen (D-Mendon), best known for his work on health care reform, on Monday officially declined to run for lieutenant governor against incumbent Brian Dubie (R-Essex Junction). Chen had only acknowledged that he was considering a run last week.

According to the Rutland Herald, Chen said that although political factors played a role, another main consideration was the strain of public life in conjunction with other job as an emergency room doctor, which was why Chen decided not to seek re-election to his state House seat.

"It has been very hard for the past six winters," Chen said. "I need a break right now."

Instead, former Vermont Inn owner Megan Smith (D-Mendon) announced that she would run for Chen's House seat. According to the Rutland Herald, Smith had worked on Chen's previous state House campaigns and said she was eager to run for the seat now that her children were out of college. She said that her campaign would focus on the issues concerning small businesses and tourism.
