Symington responds to criticism over financial records

Democratic gubernatorial candidate and House Speaker Gaye Symington today responded to weeklong criticism about her actions surrounding the release of her personal finances from Gov. Jim Douglas' re-election campaign.  

The Douglas (R-Middlebury) camp targeted his Democratic challenger this week for not releasing the personal financial information of her husband, Chuck Lacy, then assailed her for issuing "pro-forma" tax records, or documents simulated to look like real tax returns that allowed Symington to reveal only her financial information, while keeping her husband's information private. The couple had filed joint tax returns.

"Governor Douglas is ignoring the real economic pain Vermonters are facing and instead is spending his campaign making wildly inaccurate accusations against me," said Symington in a email to PolitickerVT.com. "It’s sad to see the Governor of Vermont stoop to these Karl Rove tactics just because he’s worried about losing an election."

Symington added that she would continue to propose new ideas and policies that would bring jobs to the Green Mountain State.
