Independent gubernatorial candidate Anthony Pollina is attacking more than his opponents’ policies. He is criticizing them for not participating in debates.
“Health care, higher education, affordable housing and support for frail and elderly Vermonters aren't the only important things being cut these days,” he said in a statement Wednesday. “Debates between the candidates for Governor are also being cut back. This is ridiculous, debates are a central part of any campaign and the way Vermonters learn about the candidates.”
Pollina claimed five gubernatorial debates have been canceled in the election, four of them within the last week. Pollina said they were cancelled when either incumbent Gov. Jim Douglas (R-Middlebury) or House Speaker Gaye Symington (D-Jericho) could not participate.
“This is completely unacceptable and is an insult to voters,” Pollina said. “We know they will spend big money on ads, but they can't find a few hours to provide Vermonters an opportunity to hear from the candidates together? What are they afraid of? Given all the talk about energy and the environment during the last legislative session, it is especially disappointing that the other candidates won't find the time to debate these issues during the campaign.”
Pollina said he has witnessed voters eager to attend the debates and says the recent cancellations are limiting voters’ access to information.
